Legendary comic book store owner Greg Bennett provides a pair of recommendations for comic book lovers every week. Titles are either currently on specialty store shelves or shipping or in the near future. Fans can also click on the covers to appreciate the fine art.

Final Crisis, No. 1

Final Crisis, No. 1

DC’s giant Summer event starts here! Grant Morrison brings his unique vision of super-heroes (as seen previously in Animal Man, Arkham Asylum, Doom Patrol, JLA, X-Men, and Batman, to name a few), and J.G. Jones (Wanted, 52 covers) brings the amazing art! Find out who lives and who dies, as DC’s heroes take on the most terrifying super-villain army ever assembled. This is what the last two years of crossovers and weekly comics has been building up to, as DC does its once-a-decade continuity reboot.

Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men, No. 1

Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men, No. 1

Running late, but worth the wait. Joss Whedon (Buffy, Serenity) and John Cassady (Planetary) finally wrap up their run on Astonishing X-Men with a story “too big to be contained in a normal issue”. Expect a super-big battle to keep the Earth from being destroyed, and maybe some Avengers too. There was some concern as to who could follow in their footsteps, but have no fear—the next story arc kicks off in July with Warren Ellis (Planetary, Transmetropolitan) scripts, and amazing art by up-and-comer Simone Bianchi.

Greg Bennett is the Owner/Manager of Big Planet Comics, a chain of pop art specialty stores in the DC Metro area with locations in Georgetown, Bethesda, Vienna, & College Park.
