Tezuka's Black Jack, Volume 1 from Vertical

Tezuka’s Black Jack, Volume 1, Vertical, $16.95

One of Osamu Tezuka’s weirder offerings—freelance surgeon Black Jack travels the world and performs heroic operations to raise money for charitable purposes. Really. Available in paperback, and also in hardcover (but only in comic shops).

Tamara Drewe from Mariner Books

Tamara Drewe, graphic novel, Mariner Books, $16.95

Posy Simmonds is probably best known in the USA for her groundbreaking graphic novel Gemma Bovery—a modern British retelling of Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. This time Simmonds gives a similar treatment to Thomas Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd. Really good stuff—and you don’t need to have read the original to enjoy or understand this book. Highly recommended.

Greg Bennett is the Owner/Manager of Big Planet Comics, a chain of pop art specialty stores in the DC Metro area with locations in Georgetown, Bethesda, Vienna, & College Park.
