By Greg Bennett

Legendary comic book store owner Greg Bennett provides a pair of recommendations for comic book lovers every week. Titles are either currently on specialty store shelves or shipping or in the near future. Fans can also click on the covers to appreciate the fine art.

The Alcoholic from DC Comics

The Alcoholic, hard cover, DC Comics (Vertigo), $19.99

Jonathan Ames (Wake Up, Sir!) joins the ranks of hipster novelists Michael Chabon and Jonathan Lethem and takes a crack at comics with the semi-autobiographical The Alcoholic. Frequent Harvey Pekar collaborator Dean Haspiel (The Quitter) who does everything well, from super-heroes to auto-bio, brings his usual fantastic art.

TOP 10 Season Two from DC Comics

TOP 10 Season Two, No. 1, DC Comics (Wildstorm), $2.99

Well it’s not Alan Moore, but the new TOP 10 series is by his two collaborators from Season One, Gene Ha and Zander Cannon. Good enough to qualify as methadone for your Alan Moore addiction. (If you haven’t read Season One, it’s available in two handy trade paperbacks; and yes, it’s awesome). Imagine Hill Street Blues in a city where everyone has super powers….

Greg Bennett is the Owner/Manager of Big Planet Comics, a chain of pop art specialty stores in the DC Metro area with locations in Georgetown, Bethesda, Vienna, & College Park.
