Legendary comic book store owner Greg Bennett provides a pair of recommendations for comic book lovers every week. Titles are either currently on specialty store shelves or shipping or in the near future. Fans can also click on the covers to appreciate the fine art.

John Stanley Library Melvin Monster, Volume 1 from Drawn and Quarterly

John Stanley Library Melvin Monster, Volume 1, hard cover, Drawn and Quarterly ($19.95)

John Stanley is famous for his legendary run on Little Lulu—one of the greatest all-ages comics of all time. But if you saw D&Q’s Free Comic Book Day Comic, you also know that he did some Nancy & Sluggo comics (coming this summer) and Melvin Monster. Melvin is a monster boy who just wants to be good, and go to school—much to the horror of his Mummy and Baddy. Not quite as good as Little Lulu, but what is?

Vagabond: Volume 29 from Viz Media

Vagabond: Volume 29,  trade paperback, Viz Media ($9.95)

Takehiko Inoue’s amazing saga of Miyamoto Musashi (yeah, the same guy from the Samurai Trilogy films) keeps on rolling. And before you say, “Oh man, Volume 29…!”, have no fear—Viz is packaging the early volumes in VizBig three-in-one editions, and Volume 3 (reprinting Vols. 7-9) just came out. So maybe you should start with Vagabond VizBig Vol.1. You’ll be hooked, and reading Vol.29 in no time!

Greg Bennett is the Owner/Manager of Big Planet Comics, a chain of pop art specialty stores in the DC Metro area with locations in Georgetown, Bethesda, Vienna, & College Park.
