GE plans to shed century-old appliance business


General Electric Co. said yesterday that it plans to sell or spin off its iconic appliance business that for a century sold refrigerators, air conditioners and ovens for millions of homes.

Carlyle pays $2.54 billion for part of Booz Allen


D.C. private equity firm Carlyle Group said yesterday it is buying the government contracting business of Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. for $2.54 billion — one of the few major buyouts to be announced since the credit crunch took hold last July.

'Buy down' offer sweetened to end auto strike


American Axle and Manufacturing Holdings Inc. boosted its wage offer and increased the payments it will give workers to take a wage cut as part of a tentative agreement that could settle an 11-week strike by the United Auto Workers union, a person briefed on the deal said today. 6:06 p.m.
