Tony Foriest was born in Hoskie, N.C., and raised in Alamance County. He lives in Graham. Foriest served in the U.S. Army for three years before receiving a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina and a master's degree from Elon University.
Foriest worked for the Xerox Corporation for 24 years, serving in various management roles.
He was elected to the North Carolina Senate in 2006 and served until 2010.
Foriest has worked extensively with the North Carolina Democratic Party. He served as chairman of the N.C. Senior Democrats, was a member of the N.C. Democratic Party executive committee and spent two terms as chairman of the Alamance County Democratic Party.
Foriest and his wife, Clara, have two children.
Tony Foriest is challenging Republican Rep. Howard Coble for North Carolina's 6th Congressional District seat. He ran unopposed in the May 2012 Democratic primary.
Foriest served in the state Senate, representing the 24th District, which includes Alamance and Caswell counties. He served as chairman of the Pensions & Retirement and Aging Committee, was co-chairman of the Education/Higher Education Committee, and vice chairman of the Health Committee.
He voted for the state's 2009 Racial Justice Act, which allowed death penalties to be reduced to life in prison if racism could be proven using statistics. He said he opposed the 2012 rollbacks to the law.
Foriest said his main focus is on jobs and the economy. He opposes requiring voter ID cards.
He believes that a strong middle class is the foundation of a strong economy.
