Education

Ben Lange was born in Waterloo, Iowa, and grew up in Quasqueton. He received a bachelor's degree from Southwestern University and a law degree from Hamline University.

Lange worked as a congressional aide to U.S. Rep. John Kline of Minnesota, then opened a private legal practice in Independence.

He was the Republican nominee in Iowa's 1st Congressional District in 2010 and narrowly lost to incumbent Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley.

Lange and his wife, Kelly, have three daughters.

Profile

Ben Lange gave Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley a surprisingly tough re-election race in Iowa's 1st District in 2010 and will try again in 2012.

Lange beat Dubuque businessman Rod Blum in the June 2012 Republican primary after a race that at times became personal, as the two candidates tried to differentiate themselves amid similar views on most issues.

Blum depicted Lange as a young lawyer and former congressional aide who "wants to go to Washington for the next 20, 30, 40 years."

Lange responded that he has expanded his network of support since his 2010 defeat and now has the fundraising and organizational might to beat the Democrat.

"Look at every single metric out there _ fundraising, organizational strength, grassroots support _ and we're light-years ahead," Lange said, comparing himself to Blum's campaign.

Lange argues that health reforms backed by President Barack Obama are unconstitutional. He calls for securing the nation's borders and has rejected amnesty for illegal immigrants. He supports making sure the nation's laws for admitting lawful immigrants are efficient.

On abortion, Lange believes life begins at conception and that a fetus is entitled to due process and equal protection.

Lange has called for reducing spending and balancing the federal budget.
