Dan Roberts was born and raised in San Francisco. He currently resides in the Marin County town of Tiburon, Calif. He received a bachelor's degree from San Francisco State University and a master's degree at Loyola University.

Roberts' family first came to the San Francisco Bay Area to mine gold. His father was a San Francisco Teamster.

Though he came from a family of Democrats, Roberts joined the Young Republicans as an undergraduate.

He joined the Marine Corps and fought in the Vietnam War. He received various service medals, including the Purple Heart medal and was promoted to captain.

After he completed active duty, he sold stocks and bonds and eventually founded his own investment firm.

He is widowed and has three adult sons.

Profile

Dan Roberts has limited political experience but has been active in his small town community.

He served as president of the Strawberry Area Community Council, leader of the Citizens League of Marin and president of the Bel Air Flood Control District. During the 1980s he ran unsuccessful for the Reed School District board.

He has said that he wanted to challenge Rep. Lynn Woolsey for her seat in 2010, but had left the Republican Party and could not re-register in time.

After Woolsey announced that she was retiring in 2012, he ran a campaign for the seat using his own money and promoting a platform of lower taxes and reduced government spending. He narrowly defeated a liberal Democrat to take second place in the primary election and advanced to face moderate Democrat Jared Huffman in the general election.

Roberts said if elected his first priority would be to cut spending and reduce corporate and individual taxes. He is also running on a platform of fairness in tax policy and that "all pay some, not some pay all."
