Debra Freidell Wirth was born in Manistee, Mich., and grew up in Eaton County. She received a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and a law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
Wirth served as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Ingham County.
She moved to Kansas City, Mo., in 1983, and worked in non-legal jobs before a car accident in 1988 that fractured her skull. In the year it took to recover, Wirth passed the Missouri and Kansas bar exams. She practiced law there from 1990 to 2009, primarily representing injured plaintiffs.
Wirth and her husband, Steve, live in Clinton County's Eagle Township. She has two stepchildren.
Debra Freidell Wirth is challenging House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp for his 4th Congressional District seat in 2012.
Wirth, a lawyer from Clinton County's Eagle Township, is making her first run for political office.
"I had for years _ almost 20 _ represented plaintiffs, and I still want to work for the everyday person," she said. "I dealt with a lot of clients. Now I want to deal with a lot of constituents."
She was unopposed for the Democratic nomination in the August 2012 primary.
Wirth worked as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Igham County and was a member of the Ingham County Employees Association Local 13 union.
She was a member of the Michigan Association for Justice's plaintiffs' lawyers association.
