Profile

Gary Delong, a Long Beach councilman, had a strong showing in the June 2012 primary in his bid for the open seat in the newly drawn 47th Congressional District, which extends from Long Beach to Little Saigon.

After winning 29 percent of the vote in the primary, he was tagged as one of 14 nationwide "Young Guns" contenders by the National Republican Congressional Committee.

DeLong faces a tough general election fight against Democratic state Sen. Alan Lowenthal, who garnered 33 percent of the primary vote. Democrats have more than a 30 percent advantage over Republicans in the district's voter registration.

Delong has campaigned as a fiscal conservative and a social moderate who supports gay marriage and abortion rights. He says he has not signed any no-tax pledges.

He has served two terms on the Long Beach City Council and is a third-generation Southern Californian.
