Jim Bourland was born in Bay Springs, Miss., and moved to Columbus with his family when his father was offered a high school coaching position. He currently resides in Columbus. Bourland attended Mississippi State University but did not earn a degree.

Bourland is a self-employed contractor, specializing in tree removal but also doing other work. He says he has been in the contracting business since he was 20 years old.

Bourland first ran for public office in 1988, as a Republican challenging Democratic U.S. Rep. G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery. Bourland received 11 percent of the vote in the two-man race. In 1994, he ran in the Republican primary against U.S. Sen. Trent Lott and another candidate. He got 2 percent of the vote.

Jim Bourland is running as the Constitutional Party candidate in the 2012 race for Mississippi's 1st Congressional District seat.

Bourland says he is not doing any formal campaigning but will talk to people who will listen. He has not raised or spent any money on his campaign, according to the Federal Election Commission website.

He says the country has gotten away from the established order as presented in the U.S. Constitution and in the Ten Commandments. He said abortion and same-sex marriage are both departures from the established order.

He said how the federal government should act is spelled out in the preamble to the Constitution.
