John Harris has been a member of the Lee County Commission since 1994 and prior to that served on the Opelika City Council. In 2012, he is challenging five-term incumbent Rep. Mike Rogers for Alabama's 3rd Congressional District.
Harris said he wants to be a congressman who serves the needs of the residents of the district. He said as a county commissioner he has often responded to the complaints of his constituents and has often found it difficult to get assistance from the Rogers' office.
Harris said he has no plans to become a career congressman. He said that if elected he would serve no longer than four years. "I will serve the people in my district for two terms and come home," Harris said.
He said that as a member of Congress his top goal would be to improve employment opportunities in the 3rd District, which stretches from Montgomery to Cherokee County in northeast Alabama.
