Mary Headrick was born in Baberton, Ohio, and currently resides in Maynardville, Tenn. She started her college education as a scholarship student at Wittenberg University, transferring to the University of Tennessee to save tuition costs. She received a bachelor's, a master's and a medical degree from the University of Tennessee.
She worked as a teacher and computer analyst and programmer before she decided to become a physician. Since the mid-1980s, she has worked in emergency rooms and clinics in East Tennessee.
Before enrolling in medical school, she worked for about seven years at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
She claims President Andrew Jackson as a distant uncle. She put her hobbies of carpentry and construction to use helping her husband build most of their home in Union County.
Headrick and her husband, Detlef Matt, have two adult sons.
Mary Headrick is making her first run for political office, challenging incumbent Rep. Chuck Fleischmann for Tennessee's 3rd Congressional District.
Headrick says she has worked since the 1990s for universal affordable health care. She served on state and national committees of the American College of Physicians and local and state boards of the League of Women Voters.
Her campaign website indicates her top issues are creating more blue-collar manufacturing and service jobs, campaign finance reform and a national energy policy that reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
She supports the 2010 health care reform bill, restoring Depression-era investment limits on banking and ending the war in Afghanistan. She endorses Second Amendment gun ownership rights and supports collective bargaining rights for union workers.
Headrick campaign reported in mid-July to the Federal Elections Commission that it had raised a little more than $40,000, $32,000 of it from the candidate.
