Dr. Raul Ruiz was born in Mexico and raised in Coachella, Calif., the son of migrant farmworkers. In 1990, Ruiz walked door to door, asking local businesses to help fund his education and promising, in exchange, to return to the community once he became a doctor.

In 1995, Ruiz obtained an undergraduate degree in physiological sciences from University of California, Los Angeles, and later went on to obtain a medical doctorate and two master's degrees from Harvard University.

Ruiz worked and volunteered abroad in Mexico, El Salvador and Serbia. He returned to the Coachella Valley in 2007 to work as an emergency room physician at Eisenhower Medical Center. In 2010, he founded the Coachella Valley Healthcare Initiative. Since last year, Ruiz has served as senior associate dean at UC Riverside's School of Medicine.

Profile

Dr. Raul Ruiz has run his 2012 campaign for the U.S. House on the premise that he is not a politician, but a doctor dedicated to the community.

During his campaign, Ruiz has voiced support for the 2010 Affordable Care Act, including the ban on coverage exclusions based upon pre-existing conditions. He has also said he believes other changes are still needed in the health care system, such as tort reform.

Ruiz has also said he wants to bring down health care costs by allowing Medicare to negotiate directly with pharmaceutical companies.

Ruiz has voiced his support for same-sex marriage and an overhaul of the country's immigration system that would allow a pathway to citizenship for those currently in the country illegally.
