Profile

Bob Dieterich is a banker hoping he can knock off two-term Democratic Rep. Paul Tonko in his first run for Congress.

New York's new 20th District includes Albany and is distinctly Democrat friendly. Tonko is well-known in the region from his long tenure as a state Assemblyman.

Dieterich, the third consecutive businessman chosen by local Republicans to take on Tonko, touts his experience as a banker on the campaign trail. His campaign website features a digital readout showing the growing national debt.

"Our federal government, populated with lawyers and others with little fiscal knowledge or know-how, has brought us frighteningly close to the tipping point on our national debt," he said.

Dieterich said that as a congressman he would fight for a balanced budget, deficit reduction and tax reform. While vague on specifics, the former Air National Guard captain also promises to work hard on behalf of military members and veterans and to prioritize national security.

He was part of the New York National Guard's response after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Dieterich has lagged behind Tonko in fundraising.
