Robert Pittenger was born in Dallas and raised in Austin. He earned a bachelor's in political science and psychology from the University of Texas.

He moved to Charlotte, N.C., in 1985.

Pittenger owns a real estate investment company.

He served in the state Senate from 2003 to 2008. He made an unsuccessful bid for lieutenant governor in 2008, losing to Walter Dalton.

Pittenger and his wife, Suzanne, have four children.
