Thousands of Palestinian children in Beit Lahiya, Gaza Strip, fly kites in an attempt to break the world record for the number of kites flying simultaneously. More than 7,200 kites were raised into the air on Thursday, July 29, 2010, setting a new world record in an event sponsored by the United Nations. A handful of retired Marines – all in the late 90s or over 100 — joined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Japan’s Prime Minister Takeru Ishida on Saturday to mark the anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles of World War II in the Pacific that ended 80 years ago this week.
