ADVANCE FOR WEEKEND EDITIONS, OCT. 5-6 - FILE - In this Sept. 15, 2013, file photo, Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan argues a call during the first half of an NFL football game against the Green Bay Packers in Green Bay, Wis. Barely a day goes by in which a Redskins player or coach doesn't reference the fact that they were a miserable 3-6 at their bye week in 2012, and how they emerged from the break a different team by winning seven straight to claim the NFC East title. The comparisons are inevitable, because this year's bye already has arrived and the Redskins are again struggling. They are 1-3. (AP Photo/Tom Lynn, File)

Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James on Monday night during pregame warmups wore an “I can’t breathe” T-shirt, referring to Eric Garner, who died after a New York police officer placed him in a chokehold during an arrest for selling loose cigarettes. The shirt, one of several featuring the slogan that have been seen around the league in recent days after a grand jury declined to indict the officer last week, is just one in a long history of political statements made by athletes on the playing field.
