Builder Victor Faustino of Magellan Builders displays a knack for blending an expansive new home with existing homes on a quiet street off Connecticut Avenue. The old-fashioned facade of the home at 2949 Brandywine St. NW incorporates such Arts and Crafts-style elements as brick-and-stone columns, a sloping roofline, atrium doors and transom windows.

The narrow width of the residence belies its depth and makes what could be an imposing home friendly and comfortable with the neighboring structures.

A flagstone-and-brick walkway leads to the wide flagstone covered front porch, which is trimmed in brick. The wood front door features glass sidelights and a transom window overhead, and nearby is a set of atrium doors that lead into the living room. A long driveway leads to the back of the property to the detached two-car garage.

Now on the market for $1,275,000, this Forest Hills home presents cottage-style charm from the outside. Inside, Magellan Builders created four levels of open floor plans with superior materials such as oak flooring, unusual granites, tumbled marbles and high-end prairie-style thermopane windows.

Ceilings of nine feet or higher, transom windows and plenty of windows allow light to warm all four levels, and nearly every room has recessed lighting.

An oversized foyer with elaborate crown moldings, a double-size guest closet, hardwood flooring and a glass-paned, wood front door provides a comfortable place for greeting guests. Architectural columns lead into the adjacent living room, which has crown moldings, a masonry fireplace with a stone surround and double French doors leading to the front porch.

Matching columns define the open dining room, which has crown and chair-rail moldings, a chandelier, two oversized double-hung windows and hardwood flooring. Across the hall is a powder room with hardwood flooring and a large double-hung window.

The rear of the main level is open and nearly surrounded by windows and atrium doors leading to an expansive deck. The kitchen features high ceilings and elaborate crown moldings, 42-inch maple Shaker-style cabinetry, granite counters, upgraded Jenn-Air appliances, three pendant lights and a large center island with a granite counter and a tiered breakfast bar.

Open to the kitchen is the breakfast area, which has a deep bay window, crown moldings, a chandelier, oversized windows and an atrium door leading to the deck. An informal family room adjoins the kitchen and features a 9-foot ceiling, crown moldings, recessed lighting, a gas fireplace with a granite surround and a wood mantel, oversized windows and double atrium doors to the deck. The family room is also wired for surround sound.

The deck provides plenty of space for outdoor entertaining, with half of it covered by a tongue-and-groove wooded ceiling with a ceiling fan and the other half open to the sky. Brazilian ironwood decking blends with custom-designed railings, and the whole area is enhanced with wiring for a stereo system.

The master suite on the second level overlooks the back yard and includes a bay windowed sitting alcove, six double-hung windows and two additional casement windows, crown moldings, and recessed lighting. Two walk-in closets and a separate linen closet provide plenty of storage space.

The master bath features a whirlpool tub set into a granite-and-wood platform, and a large shower with a porcelain tile and marble surround and a tumbled marble-and-glass enclosure. Twelve-inch porcelain floor tiles are underfoot, and there are two custom-designed maple vanities with granite counters.

The second and third bedrooms feature plenty of double-hung windows and are linked by a full bath with a double-sink vanity, ceramic tile flooring and a combination tub-and-shower with a tile surround. The fourth bedroom features three adjoining double-hung windows and a private full bath with crown moldings and ceramic tile flooring.

The upper-level guest suite or fifth bedroom features high ceilings, a sitting area with a sloping ceiling, windows on three sides and high-tech wiring. The full bath on this level has a vaulted ceiling, a triple casement window, ceramic tile flooring and a tile tub/shower surround. This level also includes a storage room with the home's mechanical systems.

The finished lower level has a walkout through an atrium glass door leading to a covered flagstone patio. The recreation room features a 9-foot ceiling, recessed lighting and eight large windows in addition to the atrium door. A powder room with marble flooring and access to a storage closet is adjacent to the lower-level foyer.

Nearby is the sixth bedroom, which has 9-foot ceilings, two large windows and a double-size closet. A private full bath adjoins this bedroom and features a combination tub/shower with a tile surround, ceramic tile flooring and a double-size storage closet.

The lower level includes a large laundry room with cabinets, ceramic tile flooring and a utility sink. This home has been enhanced with two-zone gas heat, two-zone air conditioning, a humidifier and electronic air cleaner, a gas water heater, a whole house sprinkler system, pre-wiring for a security system and high-tech wiring for communications that include satellite, sound, cable and telephone.

Luxurious appointments, an open and airy floor plan, plenty of space for a large family or lots of guests what more does this home need? How about an excellent location in sought-after Forest Hills? Connecticut Avenue's shops and restaurants and the Van Ness Metro station are within walking distance, yet Brandywine offers a quiet, old-fashioned atmosphere.
