The saying goes, “The devil is in the details.” For custom home builders, however, joy is found in the details, particularly when these builders are designing a house for themselves.

Builder Raymond Geier, president of Cumberland Custom Homes of the Mid-Atlantic Inc., designed and built the Victorian-style home at 908 Locust St. in 1994 for himself, wife Terry Geier and their family.

The couple planned every aspect of the Herndon home to suit the needs of their extended family, including such items as a built-in bed in one bedroom, a loft play area in the turreted children’s room, shelves in every closet and an abundance of well-organized storage space.

Now on the market for $595,000, this eye-catching Victorian house features a dramatic turret at one corner, with deep bay windows in most of the rooms adding to the light inside and the distinctive architectural flair outside.

The Geiers placed their home with plenty of lawn area in the front and a tall hedge to protect their privacy from the street.

Flagstone walkways lead to the front door and the side entrance. Rose bushes, lilacs and other perennials provide a fragrant backdrop to the broad porch that wraps around two-thirds of the home and includes a swing seat.

Outdoor relaxation can also take place on the flagstone patio at the back of the house, adjacent to a lawn and garden where children can enjoy the play equipment.

The detached two-car garage includes storage space and room for a workbench.

Besides the small details, the Geiers paid attention to large-scale aspects of their home, particularly the placement of floor-to-ceiling windows and transom windows wherever possible. Crown and chair-rail moldings line the walls in most rooms, and each doorway on the main level includes detailed trim.

A wood front door with etched glass inserts provides a dramatic entrance into the two-story foyer, which has marble tiles leading to hardwood flooring and wainscoting on the walls. A curving oak staircase leads to the upper level, and the formal living room has been placed to the left of the foyer.

The living room features a large bay window with custom-designed window treatments. A similar bay window expands the adjacent dining room, which has a niche on one side for displaying art or placing a plant.

On the opposite side of the foyer is the home office, which has glass-paned pocket doors and a custom-designed bay window overlooking the porch. At the back of the home are the informal rooms for the family to enjoy, including an open family room with detailed moldings, a ceiling fan, a fireplace and plenty of windows.

Decorative columns separate this room from the deluxe kitchen and breakfast area. The upscale kitchen features such Jenn-Air appliances as a range with a downdraft on the center island, which also has a sink. A built-in desk in one corner adds to the functionality of the room, while upgraded cherry cabinets with pull-out shelves and ceramic tile flooring underfoot adds beauty.

Nearby is an elegant powder room with wood paneled wainscoting and crown moldings.

Upstairs on the bedroom level are rooms that appeal to each age group. Children adore the turret room, a two-story space with 10 windows and a ladder leading to a loft play area. The turret room features a whimsical mural with clouds and trees and vines, and includes a walk-in closet.

The second bedroom includes a double-door entrance, a walk-in closet, built-in shelves, and a Jack-and-Jill bath linked to the hall. The third bedroom, designed as a suite of two rooms, has a built-in bed in a loft section above the foyer. The larger portion of this room has a deep bay window.

The master suite features a sitting area and tall windows overlooking the back yard. The sophisticated master bath features a dual-head shower with a glass door, cherry cabinets, two separate vanities and a deep whirlpool tub with a built-in heater to keep the water warm during a long soak.

The upper-level rooms include ceiling fans and recessed lighting. In addition, this level has a conveniently located laundry room and a pull-down staircase to an abundance of attic storage.

The finished lower level features Berber carpeting and parquet flooring, and space for parties.

The recreation room has been divided into two sections with a built-in long wooden bar with a cobalt blue tile counter. One side includes space for seating areas and a home theater, while the other has space for game tables. In one corner is an elegant wet bar with cobalt blue tiles, a cobalt blue sink and Victorian-style wall sconces.

All the lighting in this room has been designed with dimmer switches.

Adjacent to the recreation room is a full bath with a shower. French doors open onto the den or guest bedroom, which has closet space and windows and is currently used as a playroom.

Built-in bookcases along one wall swing open to reveal additional storage underneath the stairs. Multiple closet doors open to reveal well-designed storage rooms with built-in shelving, including the pantry for storing bulk items, a closet with a full-size freezer, and an additional closet with a full-size refrigerator and a microwave for parties.

One of these closets can easily be converted into a wine cellar.
