Hoyas Report

Seen and heard last night at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va.:

TWO-SPORT STAR — Starting quarterback Bryan Randall, who joined the Virginia Tech basketball team Jan. 1, is contributing on the court. In eight Big East games, the 6-foot-1 Randall is averaging 3.6 points and 1.6 rebounds in 16.3 minutes. In a 76-64 loss at then-No. 20 Syracuse, Randall recorded career highs with eight points, five rebounds, and four steals.

MR. DO IT ALL — Virginia Tech senior forward Bryant Matthews is the only player in Division I who is among the top 25 in scoring, rebounding and steals. The 6-7 Matthews is the nation’s fifth-best scorer (23.6 points) and ranks 24th in rebounding (9.7) and 25th in steals (2.5). Matthews, who leads the Big East in offensive rebounding (96), became the 11th player in Tech history to score 1,400 points and grab 650 rebounds in a loss to No. 5 Connecticut on Jan. 28.
