Mother accused of abandoning child on Beltway, faces charges

A Newport News, Va., woman is facing charges including felony child neglect after police said she abandoned her 4-year-old son and struck him with her car Tuesday night on the Beltway in Falls Church.

Virginia State Police said Channoah Alece Green, 22, left her son along the heavily traveled interstate when she became upset with him. She also faces a felony hit-and-run charge related to the incident; police said she hit her son with the car when he tried to climb back inside.

“Apparently, as she pulled away, she actually struck her own child and knocked him to the ground,” Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. J.L. Doss said.

A motorist spotted the boy and called police at about 10 p.m. Officers picked him up near the Lee Highway overpass, and he was treated for cuts and bruises at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

Police turned the boy over to Fairfax County Child Protective Services. Sgt. Doss said yesterday that he already had been placed in a temporary foster home.

Police found Miss Green after she was involved in a two-car crash on southbound Interstate 95 near Richmond at about 11:30 p.m.

Miss Green faces a reckless-driving charge related to the crash, which police said is still under investigation. She was treated at a hospital and is scheduled to appear in a Fairfax County court today, Sgt. Doss said.
