Schneider sits

Catcher Brian Schneider was surprisingly absent from the Nationals’ lineup last night. But after feeling pain in his throwing shoulder late during Tuesday’s game, he realized he couldn’t play.

Schneider battled shoulder tendinitis earlier this season and received a cortisone shot to ease the pain. He’s not sure what caused the problem to come up again, but he’s hopeful he won’t be sidelined long.

“It doesn’t feel so good right now,” said Schneider, who also is dealing with a minor groin strain. “I don’t know what it was yesterday, if it was the swing or if it was a throw I made. … Something I did flared it up.”

Gary Bennett, mired in a 2-for-26 slump, made his second straight start behind the plate last night.
