D.C. United drafted Justin Moose, a 22-year old midfielder from Wake Forest, yesterday with the seventh overall pick at the MLS SuperDraft in Philadelphia.

“The priority was to get a wide player,” United coach Peter Nowak said. “Justin showed at the combine he could do the job. He played on the left and right and had great speed.”

Nowak sees Moose as a possible replacement for midfielder Dema Kovalenko, who returned to play in his native Ukraine this month after three seasons with the club.

“Hopefully I’ll have a chance to make an impact on the team, and I feel comfortable with the ball at my feet going at players one-on-one and sending the ball in and trying to create goals,” Moose said.

UCLA defender Marvell Wynne, the 19-year-old son of the former Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres baseball player, was the No. 1 pick by the MetroStars. Maryland star forward Jason Garey, who led the Terrapins to their first national title last season, was selected third by the Columbus Crew.

Moose, a 5-foot-8, 145-pound speedster, is the Demon Deacons’ all-time leader in assists with 29 and led the team in points last season.

With its second pick and No. 34 overall, United claimed Russian-born Rod Dychenko, a forward from UNLV.

United is hoping Moose will prove to be as good as the last Wake Forest player the team selected at the draft — Brian Carroll, who has become a key United starter after being chosen in 2003. The franchise liked Carroll so much, it picked his younger brother, Jeff, a 21-year-old defensive midfielder from St John’s, with its third pick (39th overall) yesterday.

With its final choice in the four-round draft, United took Maryland defender Kenney Bertz at No. 47 overall. Bertz helped the Terps win the NCAA title in 2005.

Other Terps stars drafted were forward Marc Burch (24th) to the Los Angeles Galaxy and midfielder Mike Dello-Russo (42nd) to FC Dallas. Georgetown midfielder Jeff Curtin (14th) was chosen by the Chicago Fire.

United opens its 11th season at RFK Stadium against the MetroStars on April 2.
