Identified as the wealthiest county in the nation by U.S. Census Bureau statistics last year, Loudoun County is celebrating the 250th anniversary of its founding this year.

This 517-square-mile county now has an estimated 263,036 residents, making it one of the fastest-growing counties as well as the richest, the Loudoun County government Web site reports (www.loudoun.gov).

The Census Bureau recorded the median household income in Loudoun County in 2005 at $98,483 (www.census.gov).

The average household income rose in 2006 to $106,919, the Loudoun County government Web site reports.

Residential construction in the county reflects the growing wealth and population in the area.

Until recently, development in Loudoun County has been clustered along the north and south sides of Virginia Route 7, from the Fairfax County border to Leesburg and along U.S. 50 from Chantilly to Middleburg.

While sizable planned communities have been built in these areas, such as South Riding, Brambleton, Ashburn Farm and Ashburn Village, development has been slower in the area north and west of Leesburg between the Maryland and West Virginia borders.

Small pockets of residential neighborhoods are now under development near the towns of Lucketts and Lovettsville and along Va. Route 9 near Waterford. The majority of these communities offers upscale single-family homes priced from the $700,000s to more than $1,000,000, while a few have homes priced in the $400,000s and $500,000s.
