REDSKINS REPORT

SEEN AND HEARD

Joe Theismann has taken retired Channel 4 sports anchor George Michael’s seat on owner Dan Snyder’s golf cart, at least for a day. But there was a new driver — The Danny’s right-hand man, Vinny Cerrato was behind the wheel.

Unlike last year’s brutal conditions that included mid-day, 100-plus-degree heat, yesterday was almost comfortable. The overcast skies and nice breeze made it for a quick 1 hour, 35 minute practice.

Although the team wasn’t in full pads, there appears to be more contact going on, especially in the trenches where linemen were hitting the ground on every play and by the linebackers against the running backs.

THE BUZZ

CORNELIUS GRIFFIN — Up

The veteran defensive tackle looks like he’s in the best shape of his career after an intense offseason training program.

THE ATMOSPHERE — Sideways

The diehards were present, but it was nowhere near the crowd that came screaming for autographs last year.

RANDY THOMAS — Down

The starting right guard was limited in the first practice because of knee soreness, not a good sign for a key player.

LONG SHOT OF THE DAY

Carl Berman

Age: 22

Position: WR

Ht./Wt.: 5-9/171

College: Indiana State

He’s an undrafted free agent who had 59 catches last season for the Sycamores and also returned kickoffs. Because the Redskins appear set at receiver, Berman’s chances at making the final roster are remote, but he could snag a practice squad position with a strong camp.

QUOTABLE

“We had a couple of pieces of humble pie last year. That was good for us. We needed that. It kind of brings you back down to earth.”

— Redskins linebacker Marcus Washington on the 2006 season

BY THE NUMBERS

7 Redskins fans tailgating next to the Loudoun County Parkway yesterday at 1:30 p.m., three-and-a-half hours before the start of practice.

TODAY’S SCHEDULE

The Redskins have their first two-a-day — an 8:30 a.m. practice (closed to the public) and a 4:30 p.m. practice (open to the public).
