Nationals Report

SEEN AND HEARD AT TURNER FIELD

ATLANTA Jeff Smoker, the 31st pick in this month’s draft, was at the ballpark yesterday to meet manager Manny Acta, team president Stan Kasten and others.

Smoker, an 18-year-old left-hander from Calhoun, Ga., has committed to attend Clemson in the fall but said he would prefer to sign with the Nationals.

“I’m really open to signing,” he said. “It’s always been my dream to play big league baseball, and what better than to play in the nation’s capital? That would be an unbelievable feeling.”

OVERHEARD

“I don’t know what the record for being sent down and called back up is, but this has got to be close.”

Reliever Chris Schroder, who was recalled by the Nationals on Sunday, 45 minutes after being optioned to Class AAA Columbus

Nationals LHP Mike Bacsik (1-4, 4.70) vs. Braves RHP Buddy Carlyle (1-2, 6.11), 7:35 p.m., MASN2, AM-1500, FM-107.7.
