DE93 PHILLIP DANIELS

How acquired: Free agent (2004)

The skinny: Daniels finished with only three sacks last season, underwent offseason surgery and has a tricky back. At 34, how much does he have left?

DT 96 CORNELIUS GRIFFIN

How acquired: Free agent (2004)

The skinny: Injuries to his hips and left shoulder slowed Griffin the past two seasons, but he’s finally healthy again. Griffin, 30, believes he’s primed for a big season.

DT 64 KEDRIC GOLSTON

How acquired: Draft (2006)

The skinny: Golston stepped in for injured Joe Salave’a last season and never gave the job back. At 24, he’s the only member of the front four whose best days lie ahead.

DE 99 ANDRE CARTER

How acquired: Free agent (2006)

The skinny: Carter salvaged last season with four sacks and 41 tackles in the final five games. Weak against the run but knows how to get to the quarterback.

LB 53 MARCUS WASHINGTON

How acquired: Free agent (2004)

The skinny: Ex-Pro Bowler was hampered by a bad hip much of last season. An elbow injury kept him out of the final two games of this preseason.

MLB 59 LONDON FLETCHER

How acquired: Free agent (2007)

The skinny: Fletcher, the NFL’s top tackler this decade, is a vocal leader. He has a nose for the ball and full knowledge of this defensive scheme.

LB 52 ROCKY MCINTOSH

How acquired: Draft (2006)

The skinny: Second-year man made a quantum leap this preseason. He was a force against the run and the pass, making former starter Lemar Marshall expendable.

CB 24 SHAWN SPRINGS

How acquired: Free agent (2004)

The skinny: Springs missed two months with a sports hernia, a week with a hamstring and the finale with a broken shoulder. At 32, he wants to show he still is an elite player.

CB 22 CARLOS ROGERS

How acquired: Draft (2005)

The skinny: Rogers played well enough this summer to keep Fred Smoot out of the lineup, but he needs to catch those balls he so often gets his hands on.

SS 30 LARON LANDRY

How acquired: Draft (2007)

The skinny: The No. 6 pick of this year’s draft is aggressive and athletic. That Landry is starting already indicates how much faith the Redskins have in the ex-LSU star.

FS 21 SEAN TAYLOR

How acquired: Draft (2004)

The skinny: The arrival of Landry frees up Taylor, coming off his first Pro Bowl appearance, to do what he does best: roam the field and create havoc.

SPECIAL TEAMS

P 4 DERRICK FROST

How acquired: Free agent (2005)

The skinny: Frost’s performance this summer showed that, like many punters, he probably just needed a couple of years to find his groove.

K 6 SHAUN SUISHAM

How acquired: Free agent (2006)

The skinny: The Canadian nailed 8-of-9 field-goal attempts after signing late in the season. He will become a fixture if he maintains that kind of accuracy.
