Throught the years of the Soviet Union the American media, academics and - in turn - most citizens used "Russia" as a synoym for the "Soviet Union." The reality of that usage being wrong should have set in after the breakup of the USSR.
Here though we read “… the formerly two-nation medal derby that the U.S. and Russia have waged for years.” There they go again – using “Russia” as a synonym for the Soviet Union. For seventy years the teams of the Soviet Union were made up of many nationalities but our media called them all Russians. A study of the nationalities of the medal winners and world record holders from the Soviet team over the years showed a huge number of non-Russians. Indeed, at least in several Olympics Ukraine would have been 3rd or 4th in the medal count.
I am joinging millions of other people to boycott the 08 Olympics in China due to their governments horrific human rights violations, Tibet, and for the pollution they are creating which is contributing to global warming and killing the planet. We are not going to watch the Olympics on TV and refuse to buy or use any products or services of any company which sponsors the Olympics. We are asking you to email your friends and ask them to join you in supporting these humanitarian efforts!!
