Iran knows that there are not just nuclear issues we have to contend with and that is what they are leveraging. We need to know the quantity and the quality of conventional weapons Russia and China have sold to Iran. If Israel decides to take action in it's national security interests, do we have the capability keeping the Straits of Hormuz open against those conventional weapons systems that Iran is leveraging? Now that Russia has provided Venezuela with a confidence factor in weapons systems, do we have the capability of sustain our energy requirements if Chavez pulls in to support Iran and decides to sell all of its oil to China? How will the EU fare under a Russian energy domination? There is a storm building and the Democrats in Congress are not just out of session, they have been in their storm cellars for four years.
The only problem with this theory is that Saudi Arabia does not have this kind of influence over Iran.
"While the Saudis and the UAE are primarily Sunni Muslims and the Iranians are primarily Shi'ite, tensions between these Islamic branches would not be a significant factor in this dynamic "
This is another major mistake. This isn't a difference like methodists vs baptists. Each side has in the past approved of wars againts the other and the killing of thousands upon thousands.
Misunderstand evil and you will be blindsided.
We are ignoring nuclear proliferation. If Iran goes nuclear, the Saudi's are more than capable of nuclear parity.
