Ethanol in gas won't be halved

This is lunacy. It takes 70% more energy to produce ethanol than it contains, a Cornell U scientist reports. Even if ethanol actually produces a slight gain -- which is the best scenario possible-- is it worth all the attendent problems it brings: depleting valuable water supplies, pollution of rivers, increasing food prices and decrease in fuel efficiency and cost of transport? The answer is obviously NO!! This is costing us big, in many ways and produces nothing but votes from farm states. But that's all the politicians seem to care about. Votes are more important than what's good for the entire country. Cornelius (see comment below) is right, it does seem that ethanol is to Congress and the Administration all about votes and Professor Pimentel at Cornell has his points but read his comments carefully. He is referring to the long term use of corn based ethanol. The bottom line is that we need to attempt a broad spectrum of renewable fuels. Ethanol from corn is a first step(demonstrated impractical), more importantly it is a critical step in developing sources such as cellulosic fibers and grasses.

I have one little piece of advice for Kate McMahon of Friends of the Earth, and others of her ilk, from the great country singer Hank Williams Jr...."Don't tell me to ride a bus or turn down my thermostat, when you're all running around in jets and Cadillacs". The thing about these folks is that they want everyone to go back to the Stone Age...well, why don't they do us all a favor and go there FIRST! I do believe the word hypocrite means something here...and just so you know, I and my wife both drive four-cylinder cars! That helps me put money on more important things, like food. Nothing drives me up the wall more than preachy environmental types...

The leftist KOOKS who infest the EPA were put there by the Clinton Administration for a purpose...... to create as much trouble as possible with the U S economy. The Justice department and FBI should open an investigation into the terrorist activities being promulgated by these left wing enviro FREAKS..... Maybe if we move that department to Guantanamo things would settle down a bit.
