Art sometimes seems to be a province of Wealth: a paradox when one considers that many artists have starved in their early years, sometimes all through life. Dutch burghers certainly valued their carpets and paintings and were prepared to pay for them. Gifted painters were not above treating them as subjects, even if not without irony.
Van Meegeren, the forger, knew his art but he loved money better, and was prepared to cheat. His forged "Supper at Emmaus" is replete with irony.
The book is a comment on the ways of the art world, its experts and dealers.
Collection of flowers.
The right rose
appears in my mind,
and everywhere
shines when the
soft wind remains
in the light of
a flower; the cold
leaf is dead
and here there's
a shadow, the
delicate dark and
a loving profile.
