Putin has overreached. He is attempting to assert domination over the independent former Soviet Republics.
The same global community that would not intervene to rescue the Burmese cyclone victims because of "national sovereignty" may fail to preserve the sovereignty of Georgia and rescue its people.
What is the worst thing about the war is the extremely bad performance of the Georgian army in the conflict.
I believe the 2nd biggest disappointment to all this - after Rice & Bush and the US totally misreading this situation, is how the Europeans have been so inept in their response to Russia's overreaching into Georgia. What are the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and others thinking? Their newspaper headlines all feature how the US and Russia are facing off over this - when it is the Euro's themselves who need to step up and step up RIGHT NOW. History is pretty clear on what a strategy of appeasement eventually leads to.
For France to be the lead negotiator with Russia on this very weak agreement should be of grave concern to the Euro's, the US, and the world. And having Rice in the driver's seat from the US is equally disturbing - she is weak.
This is all very-very disturbing. I can't believe Bush can't use some real and immediate muscle to get the Russians to back off and to get this whacko Georgian President to cool it.
