Do you know what was one the biggest disappointments about this situation here in Russia? Many of Russians had an illusion of independence of well-known western mass media (especially because there are some problems with objectivity of local press in Russia), and it appeared that independent mass media is a nonsense regardless of the part of the world.
The war at Kavkaz (a tragedy from any point of view) was accompanied by an information war. And Russia lost the information war of cause. Let’s think logically, could Saakashvily think he could withstand Russian forces? Of cause not. The intension might have been to provoke Russia and having gave up Osetia, and having been promised support from US, gain more trump cards for the information war.
I believe Europe has not responded hard and unambiguously because the situation is much more complex than it may appear looking at CNN news. Besides, Europe more than USA is interested in stability and economical relationships with Russia. But also the situation itself is very complex.
Do you remember Kosovo? The situation at Kazkaz is very similar to Kosovo. It's ethnical conflict between Georgians and Ossetians, not Russia started this conflict, it has existed for hundreds if not thousands of years before. USA and European Union decided that Kosovo citizens has a right to live separately, why do they deny this right for Abkhazians and South Ossetians now?
Do you remember when NATO bombed Serbian CIVIL infrastructure like bridges? Russia attacked war bases only it was not an intension to destroy economics or "blast the oil tube". Do you remember execution of Saddam Hussein? Russia has not tired to catch Saakashvili, although there may be documents submitted to Haag tribunal, from both sides.
Russia has interested in loyal government in the neighbor post USSR countries. It concerns NATO, which is historically considered as enemy, coming to the borders. Ironically most safely for all would be if Russia entered NATO itself, which is impossible unfortunately. But Russia never can dare to come so far to conquer the neighbors. This was not an intension to come to Tbilisi to "change regime". From the other hand many post soviet country politicians are interested in the image of threatening "Russia bear" to gain benefits toward cooperation and acknowledgment of European Union. USA are interested to draw away attention from future operations in Iran, of many other setting world order operations such as war in Iraq and others.
So it's an information war. I don't try to advocate Russia. I try to say we should think critically of the information coming from mass media, and don't try to oversimplify the situation and accuse only one or another side of the conflict.
