There is a great deal of difference between Georgia's and Ukraine's military strength. Russia would have a real fight on it's hands with Ukraine. Also, other eastern European countries could decide to help. The Russian troops that invaded Georgia appeared to be very undisciplined. These type of soldiers tend not to fare well when they come up against a resolute force of a more comparable size. We will have to wait and see. Putin's thugs also made noise about attacking Poland. He is getting close to letting his mouth overload his a-s. The Russian military ain't what it used to be.

Civil war. Ukraine will dismember itself given the right amount of pressure.

"The BTC pipeline was advocated by President Clinton and the current President Bush as a way to make the Caucasus states of Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia less dependent on Russia and Iran " - Actually, Turkey and Azerbaiajan made sure that the pipeline as well as the Baku-Tiblissi-Kars railroad both avoided Armenia thus completely isolating a struggling democracy whose borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan already closed. The US and the EU didn't seem to care that a small viable democracy was left twisting in the wind.

What good is NATO if only the US is willing to confront evil on its behalf? We should just get out of NATO and form a new alliance with the Eastern European countries who have some spine along with recent memories of Russian domination. Tell the ever-so-diplomatic Eurotrash that they're on their own. Sheesh, protect people for 50 years and this is the thanks you get!

There is one Cold War tactic that Putin is implementing that needs to be stopped. They are withdrawing alright, but only after destroying any capability of Georgia to fight the Ossetian militant insurgency that the Russians will leave behind. This is the maintenance portion of objectives 1 thru 3. The Russians have played Pontius Pilate with Ossetia militants during the entire occupation and have simply stated they cannot control them. As far as Europe goes, if the U.S. can't gain energy independence to assist them, it may be a long cold winter which would lend itself very well to a Russo-Europe Security Coalition over NATO all brought to you by the efforts of Obama, Reid and Pelosi carbon emissions specialists in conjunction with Global Warming, the U.N. and the EU.
