Here’s a look at some key position battles with final cuts needed less than 48 hours after the final preseason game:
WIDE RECEIVER
Safe: Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El, James Thrash, Malcolm Kelly, Devin Thomas
On the bubble: Billy McMullen
In trouble: Anthony Mix, Horace Gant, Maurice Mann
Skinny: McMullen is in a similar situation as Mason, although the injuries that have slowed Kelly and Thomas could help him.
OFFENSIVE LINE
Safe: Chris Samuels, Jon Jansen, Pete Kendall, Randy Thomas, Casey Rabach, Stephon Heyer, Chad Rinehart, Jason Fabini
On the bubble: Justin Geisinger, Andrew Crummey, Todd Wade
In trouble: Devin Clark, Fred Matua, Tavares Washington
Skinny: Probably only one spot for one of the players trying to be the backup center or Wade, who has missed most of camp with an ankle injury.
LINEBACKERS
Safe: London Fletcher, Marcus Washington, Rocky McIntosh, H.B. Blades, Khary Campbell
On the bubble: Alfred Fincher
In trouble: David Holloway, Danny Verdun-Wheeler
Skinny: Only keeping two backups with McIntosh coming back from knee surgery could be a risk. They also could grab someone else’s castoff as a potential No. 6 linebacker.
CORNERBACKS
Safe: Shawn Springs, Carlos Rogers, Fred Smoot
On the bubble: Leigh Torrence, Justin Tryon, Matterral Richardson
In trouble: Byron Westbrook, Cedrick Holt
Skinny: Torrence is probably safe, especially if they keep five corners, and it would be an upset for the undrafted Richardson to beat out a fourth-round pick in Tryon.
SAFETIES
Safe: LaRon Landry, Reed Doughty, Kareem Moore, Chris Horton
On the bubble: Justin Hamilton
In trouble: Patrick Ghee
Skinny: This is another position at which the Redskins could look at other teams’ cuts for a veteran reserve.
SPECIALISTS
Safe: Ethan Albright, Shaun Suisham
On the bubble: Derrick Frost, Durant Brooks
Skinny: They’re both going to punt against the Jaguars, so maybe one great punt is the final factor.
