Out of several hundred US miters and red hats, only one, Thomas Gumbleton, has broken with the strict party line, and suffered the consequences of speaking truth to power.
Out of approx 4,400 miters and red hats worldwide, only one other, Geoffrey Robinson (Australia), has had the courage to speak out. He has, likewise, suffered the slings and arrows of the others who "go along to get along."
Shame, shame, shame!
While I don't condone their so-called secrecy policy, it occurs to me that the current American press is hostile to religion and, for the most part, ignorant of religion and religious issues. The Catholic Church is not a democracy and the Bishops have lots of issues to deal with and little time, the least of which is to spend on reporters that want to play the gotcha game.
