I wish people would start listening to what Obama is saying and quit swooning over his image. He believes in the peoples right to bear arms and he believes the GOVERNMENTS RIGHT TO CONTROL THE SECOND AMENDMENT. The new special interest group that has taken over Washington is lawyers. They can turn a semi-automatic rifle into an assault weapon with one precedence setting case through jury shopping. They can exploit emotion to the extent that legislation will dicate those owned guns will have to be stored in an armory like they do in Canada. Obama is a lawyer and picks his words very carefully with regard to politics. You want to know what he really means, get him in a open forum town hall like McCain uses on his campaign. The surge helped reduce violence and there should be less abortions. These are neutered relative statements by Obama, observations without any judgement on the issue. Don't forget about small town American's relying on religion and guns. This is the man and why he speaks in generalities.

Obama is a radical leftist who is a danger to the world, he wants to disarm everyone except for the criminals and the government. His statements about wanting to protect our Second Amendment rights are bull for the nsive, if we are foolish enough to let him be elected he will work hard to disarm all honest citizens.

First of all the deep summer poll numbers just don't mean that much--they are almost never indicative of what happens in November. But as it seems that the McCain Team has chosen wisely for VP there is hope of stopping the ObamaMessiah, gun grabbers all. But then I am Just Another Bitter American Clinging to My God and Guns NORTH TO ALASKA-YEA THE RUSH IS ON! That would be RUSH Limbaugh (o:

Of course Obama is talking about guns- they are inextricably linked to gun violence, which is a HUGE public health problem in America. My question is though, why aren’t we talking about solutions? How about strengthening background checks to ensure CRIMINALS and TERRORISTS do not get guns, and wreak havoc in our communities? Right now, criminals can get guns at gun shows without undergoing Brady background checks. And suspected terrorists, who aren’t allowed to fly, but can buy such weapons of war as AK-47s (see the recent Newsweek article on the Terror Gap: http://www.newsweek.com/id/154913). Secondly, why are you even rehatching the non-issue of gun confiscation? This has never been a viable political option and, with the Supreme Court case ruling in June that gun bans are unconstitutional, it is obviously not a legal option either. Obama understands that there is an individual right to own a gun in this country—but that there are sensible limitations. As he said last night, “The reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than they are for those plagued by gang violence in Cleveland, but don't tell me we can't uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals.” Let’s TALK about the kind of solutions that are respectful of legal gun owner while also ensuring the safety of our kids and communities.

After hearing Obama support the right to bear arms. I did quick check and found that he has voted for every gun ban in his state. Can you say flip flop again.

One can only wonder if liberals would allow someone who supports as many restrictions against abortion as Obama has against lawful firearms ownership to go around calling themself pro-abotion? Go figure...

To MW, In order to sell firearms in this country one must first be licensed by the federal government. That includes dealers who sell firearms at gun shows. By law, dealers are required to have potential buyers fill out a federal form, and with the information provided, they contact the National Instant Check System (NICS) prior to finishing the transaction. If they don't check out, they don't get the gun. You have been misinformed. There is no gun show loophole. That's just a scare tactic used by those who wish to outlaw guns (i.e. Brady Bunch, etc). The truth is, less than 1 percent of guns obtained by criminals are obtained at gun shows (or gun stores for that matter). The "gun control" issue will continue to be relevent until organizations like the Brady Center and the Violence Policy Center stop trying to take away our right to self defense. And finally, people in rural America and people in the inner cities have the same right to defend themselves, a right protected by the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Yes, there is a huge problem with gun violence within the inner cities, and it is even creeping to the suburbs and rural areas of this country, but we DO NOT have a gun problem, we have a CRIMINAL problem. Instead of banning law abiding citizens the firearms they might use to defend themselves against these human preditors, we should be focusing on providing law enforcement with the tools and manpower to go after the thugs and gangbangers. There are several cities in this country that have already figured that out. Richmond Virginia is one. They have made a concerted effort to go after drug dealers, gang bangers and other criminals. Local police work with FBI and BATF agents to put these thugs away. Crimes committed with firearms are dealt with severely with maximum sentances and longer jail time. And it is working. Gun violence is down in Richmond. This is the ONLY way to stop gun violence once and for all. Take the perps off the streets and lock them up for a very long time... with no parole. There is not a single gun control law that has been proven to be effective in keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals. The only thing these laws have been effective at is disarming law-abiding citizens thereby making them easy targets for unscrupulous human preditors.

MW, if you are reading Newsweek I am surprised; I thought that rag died years ago. But here is an idea that might work: leave the honest people who own and carry alone and use the police to catch bad guys. Then you put those bad guys in jail. When our various political entities pass these silly gun laws the only people who obey are the law abiding people. The bad guys don't--that is why we call them bad guys. This whole idea of licenses, registration and background checks is nothing more than a prelude to more control and should offend anyone interested in civil and human rights. The police can't protect us, they want to and they certainly try. It is just a sheer impossibility. The night my wife and I needed to call 9-1-1 it took the police nine minutes to respond to the call, eleven minutes after the alarm sounded. Thankfully I did have a gun.

The one leathal weapon common to most Chicago and most other (euphemistically called) "minority" community murders is the illegitimate, welfare raised crackhead, gangbanger thug. If we fail to elect polititions who will pass laws and make judicial appointments aimed squarely at these murdering "mammas", nothing else will matter. Most certainly counterproductive to safer streets in America, is the Daley/ Obama inclination to effectively disarm law abiding citizens (Sorry, I forgot,Obama respects the 2nd ammendment). This will most assuredly accelerate what is now an incrimental advance toward police state, (with corrupt "affirmative action" cops) 3rd world standards in cities and "hoods" across the US. I think it's alerady too late for political reasons (look at the Democrat power base),but if we were to get these killers off of American streets, gun ownership won't be much of an issue. Obviously, Obama is the last thing we need in the presidency or anywhere in government for that matter. He's a proven lying sleezebag and his wife is a flake. Doesn't 20 years of afiliation with a hate mongering preacher and long term friendshp with convicted domestic terrorists say enough about this character? FROM MY COLD DEAD FINGERS!!!

Saying Obama flip flops on this isn't accurate. He obviously lies about this.

Obama is flat out dishonest. It really makes you wonder what exactly he is up to. He came out of nowhere and is being pushed along on popularity and not much else. I can not understand why, with all the pro gun information out there. That more is not being done to educate people on the realities of gun bans through history.

Well, probably one of the reasons the cops took so long to get to RobertG's house is that they weren't patrolling a neighborhood looking for criminals or actively trying to track any down...no, they were probably busy radaring for speeders on some local or state thoroughfare...its not about "protect and serve" in many places, its about generating more revenue for the municipality...taxing you just doesn't get enough into their coffers...and oh, yeah, if they WERE dedicated and inclined to pursue criminals, they would be soon disabused of that notion at the first trial when the defense attorney(ies) found every reason to consider what the cops had done to their client, and not what their client had done to warrant the attention of the cops...the only time in my whole life I was ever "hassled" by police was in a "dry" Southern town and I had a few beers at a club and was walking to a motel...I got a ride there instead, after some dumb questions...I don't do drugs, I don't steal, and I hope I will never have to do violence against another human being (but I reserve the right in self-defense of body, family and property)...FREE RAMOS AND COMPEAN!...(see what happens to law enforcement when they take on criminals?)
