Oddly enough the pension plans of the Big (that is so ironic) Three Auto makers are adequetly or over funded. Even if they declare bankrupcy past history of bankupcies strongly suggest that a bankrupcy judge won't allow the auto makers to shed the pension debt and will force them to keep it. The pensioneers will probably make out well. It's the current rank and file who are on a short pier to nowhere. The older workers got theirs and the current ones get the shaft.
