Obama's role so far has been built on consensus, not leadership. It's pretty evident the Congress is pulling the strings. If Osborne says Congress won't allow it, don't expect Obama to be able to override it.
Notice how most of what Obama has said about his policies are basically regurgitated ideas of genuine conservatism, such as the power of states and not raising taxes in the economic crisis.
Seems like Obama may be smart enough to not implement all his socialist ideas after all.
I am highly skeptical by conflicting signals. He already has gone on record stating his endorsement for the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) that tramples all over states rights under the guise of interstate commerce clause of the US Constitution. I find it pretty weak ground especially given the inconsistency. For years young people have been able to cross over state lines and buy a drink in a state that has lower legal drinking age. Which Obama is leading here (the strong central gov or states rights advocate or is it situational)?
While I hope Obama actually FOLLOWS THROUGH with these ideas, I'll have to remain dubious. Thankfully, our Alamo style stand in the Senate ended ANY of the hopes that Obama or his liberal minions had to cram through their socialist agenda. The fact that this particular Alamo turned out differently than the historical one is a MAIN reason why these "centerist" comments will be more commonplace here in the future. There are more mines in the field now than previously hoped by the Dems.
For those like me that can recall the LBJ/Goldwater election and the post election jokes, remember this...the LBJ Team looking for copies of Goldwater campaign promisies, speeches, business plans and the list goes on. So are we seeing a repeat of the Goldwater/LBJ post election planning in BHO. BHO never did reveal a true plan of his own that had some function but a lot of pie in the sky items. Now that it is time to get down to the business of the executive seat, does he really know anything? I don't think so!

In encouraging the states to experiment, Mr. Obama didn't refer to Republicans, instead tracing the concept back to Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, who in a dissent in a 1932 court case said states could "serve as a laboratory; and try novel social and economic experiments without risk to the rest of the country."

In recent history it has been the republicans who haved smotherd the states as being incubaters of ideas.
Any state that passed a law that interfered with corporate greed would set the corporate lobbyist to work.
They would simply get federal laws passed therein negating state laws.
Obama should be congratulated for returning to this system.
I object to your word choices. "Hijacks GOP language"? Could there be some hyperbole here? Ya think? There is nothing uniquely Republican about what President-Elect Obama proposed. I wasn't aware that Republicans had a copyright on these words . . .

I agree, that title shows a bit of bias, but you have to admit that these are all ideas that the GOP has been advocating lately, and until now the Democrats have denied the usefulness of.
I heard Mr. Osborne say that Mr. Obama understands government & how it gets done by instinct. What an excellent trait. Mr. Obama also spoke of the spirit of the country as a whole, another inspiring thought. It seems Mr. Obama is damned if he does & if he doesn't. The socialist label was campaign rhetoric only & clearly didn't work. His every step has been near the center, thankfully back from the way right, & still the dissatisfaction. He, nor any man will ever please all the people all the time. There undeniably will be experimentation & trial & error. He is truly wise to take each step slowly & surely & well thought out. Even if that means changing course or rethinking ideas for the better. Which president ever took office with a full complete plan & fully completely followed through without waivering. This is a brilliant man with our & our countries best inerests at heart. He will be our president for at least 4 years. Bush got two chances & now we're at rock bottom. More of the same isn't the answer. More bi-partisanship will get us nowhere. Winning arguments (battles) & losing the war (at home) isn't an option. It increasingly looks like this will be our only chance. The model for success must be formed properly right now with an undivided effort. The U-SA can't wait!!
I don't care if Obama highjacks anybody's language. And maybe using this kind of language and ideas means he reall is going to work across party lines to get things done. Maybe the liberal illuminati did lead us totally astray about Obama after all. But that is yet to be determined.
Obama is a man who doesn't like to get his hands dirty, so he talks around things. For example "SAVE or create" 2.5 million jobs. How do you define saved jobs when people are working? How about eliminate the "threat" of terrorism? In risk management you reduce threats through contingency plans that don't eliminate the risk. His statement is completely reactive and provokes a defensive national security posture. This is in line with the HillBills as Secretary of State. Bill was reactive and worse, he never committed U.S. force unilaterally in U.S. interests (WTC, Khobar Towers, Embassies and USS Cole bombings, test beds for 911) but he did in international interests (Kosovo). Obama is a lawyer and uses a lawyers tautology for consensus, but has no idea on compliance. If he hijacks the GOP language, he better bring the GOP on board to implement or he, with his cabinet and staff appointments and a Democrat led Congress, he is just going to screw it up worse. The Democrats have no idea on how to implement conservative ideas, so far they have only been able to blame.
