Well, what a surprise that this paper distorts the facts and fails to give a full account of Myers' reasons behind his blog post. The whole "send me crackers" gag (and that's what it is, people) is Myers' expression of outrage over an incident in Florida in which a college student attended a Catholic mass, and, instead of eating the communion wafer right away, took it out of the church with him when the service was over. For this, the young man has received DEATH THREATS, and even been accused of a hate crime (I am not kidding you) by a spokesperson for the diocese. All because he took a CRACKER out of a church! Clearly the reaction of Catholics to this incident has been bugnut insane. And this was what Myers was commenting upon. What kinds of lunatics threaten a guy's LIFE just because he took a communion wafer out of a church!? BUT...leave it to the likes of Bill Donahue to get his persecution complex on and, in reaction to nothing more than a snarky blog post by an atheist, try to get Myers fired and his life ruined (which won't happen — sorry, fatso, but the 1st Amendment protects atheists too). Also, Donahue encouraged people to email Myers with their outrage, and they sent him...you guessed it...even more death threats. All of which, I think, proves Myers' point about the lunatic behavior of these religionists. Clearly the Catholic League is an organization that exists for no other reason than to give this windbag Donahue, who seems to have no actual marketable skills, the ability to earn a living being angry and feeling victimized all the time, not to mention calling on witch hunts. Little modern day Inquisitor, he, eh? I'll say it here and now: anyone who reveres a CRACKER is CRACKERS! And anyone who would threaten someone's life over making jokes about DESECRATING CRACKERS is psycho! As for blasphemy, well, good grief, people. It's 2008! Come out of the middle ages already. Blasphemy is a victimless crime. All this whole fiasco has proved is not the evil, intolerant hatefulness of PZ Myers, but of the crazed religionists who are going after him tooth and nail over a big joke. If you get outraged over people who don't share your faith exercising their free speech, then I see no reason to treat you or your beliefs with the respect you seem to think is your birthright.

The Catholics have reacted to this cracker incident like mentally retarded children. There were death threats against both the student and professor Myers because of a worthless cracker. PZ Myers has the most visited science blog on the internet. He is one of the strongest defenders of science education in America. The Catholics who are harassing PZ and threatening to murder him (because of a cracker) are idiots. To see the best and most popular science blog on earth, Pharyngula, just google "PZ".

What a lovely hatched job! How much did the Donahue guy pay for this? Lighten up people, it's a freakin' cracker! When someone says: it was "hard to think of anything more vile than to intentionally desecrate the Body of Christ" he has a problem. Really Mr. Donahue, is it that hard to think of anything more vile? - What about pedophilia, especially from the Catholic pulpits? - What about death threats? - What about killing, rape, genocide, crusades? See ... it's not that hard, you just need to be human to realize it!

I would challenge Mr. Donohue to demonstrate [not merely assert] that the wafer is the "Body of Christ". This whole kerfuffle is about religious assertions that can in now way be proven. It is simply about the willingness of Prof. Myers to assert that some religious practice is ridiculous in his atheist view. That seems to be freedom of speech. What Mr. Donohue has chosen to do is get foolishly upset about the issue, something that Mr. Donohue seems to be in the habit of doing while loosing his mob on the supposed blasphemers. Is God so petty that He can be bothered by such trivia?

If there was ever a finest argument against Catholicism and Christianity (outside of all the dogma-soaked hatred, intolerance, and bloodshed over the centuries), it would be the childish, unreasoning attitude and primitive, boorish posturing of this pathetic simpleton, Bill Donohue. This epic gasbag should use his volume for something of import, like cleaning out the degenerates, criminals, and hate-mongers from within his own holier-than-thou tribe before he even THINKS to accuse anyone outside it, especially for supposed instances of "intolerance" and "hate" -- acts whose most excelled practitioners are among adherents to religious dogma. Of course, that would require Dr. Donohue exile himself; far too much for his wicked, power-loving, cognitively neutered mind to endure. Being the goading bully he never fails to exemplify, Dr. Donohue's self-absorbed role as valiant defender of the Catholic/Christian fairytale is all that exists to prop up his similarly cartoonish personality. He doesn't just enjoy these opportunities -- the bulbous swine doesn't just wallow in them -- oh no. Having devoted his life to protect an utterly hollow system of civilization-retarding dogmatic rubbish, Dr. Donohue now needs these temper tantrums to legitimize his likewise shallow, fanciful, stage production of an existence. Let us hope that this incident gets many Catholics (and those of other religions) to question what they hold to be so "sacred." Labeling this as a "hate crime" is just insulting. Seriously, it's a wafer -- a piece of food. Yeah, seriously, just flour and water. And death threats over a piece of food? Cartoons, anyone? Anyone?...

Bill Donahue, anti-Semite: "Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular. It's not a secret, okay? And I'm not afraid to say it. ... Hollywood likes anal sex."

The whole story: Fla Student takes Eucharist from mass and holds it "hostage" until school stops funding religious services. When someone tried to forcibly take it from him, he returns it saying he realizes he is hurting blameless people. Good for the student. There is no proof, only his word (and now this professor's) that death threats were made. If they were, that would be wrong. One does wonder if either of these two would dare to do to a Koran what they will lightheartedly do to a Consercrated Eucharistic Host. It takes no guts to go after Christians. That's an acceptable prejudice, and most of them will pray for you, not slice your head off. The Koran? Now that's daring. This is a simple matter of respecting the beliefs of others, which liberals should be able to do.

Mari, Catholic thugs have been threatening a university professor because of a cracker. There's no excuse for it. The Catholics who have been making a big deal out of a worthless piece of bread should be ashamed of themselves. They are actually trying to get a student thrown out of his university, and they are trying to get a professor fired, because of a lousy cracker. These Catholics are terrorists and they're no better than Muslim terrorists who riot because of a cartoon. Also, what the heck is wrong with Catholics? Do they really think their God cares if one student doesn't want to eat a worthless tasteless cracker? It's very obvious Catholics, besides having no moral values, are insane, totally out of their minds. Catholics are a lot like dogs. Train a dog or train a Catholic, and they will do what they're told. Catholics never have an original thought. They never think for themselves. They blindly believe everything they were trained to believe, never doubting anything no matter how idiotic it is. And there couldn't possibly be anything more idiotic than a priest saying some magic words to insert Jesus into a wafer. The Catholics are just plain nuts. And dangerous.

SkepticalOfYourBeliefs

A common theme from those who know next to nothing about Dr. Myers or his blog is that Myers is only targeting Christians; and usually uttered are meaningless things like "he would never do that to a Koran!" Mari, by all means, familiarize yourself with his notorious Pharyngula site. There, you shall discover that he is an equal opportunity offender. BTW, Myers does have proof of death threats against him, as those that chose to threaten him sent him several emails. He has even posted them for all to see.

It is not "worthless" to Catholics. They didn't start this. There is no proof that anyone's life has been threatened, although that would be very wrong. Catholics believe that this bread is the Body and Blood of the Christ. You don't believe that, fine. But respect it. This anti-Catholic behavior cannot be justified, and calling Catholics "insane" really does not help you make a credible argument.

"Mari, by all means, familiarize yourself with his notorious Pharyngula site. There, you shall discover that he is an equal opportunity offender." Oh, well, if he's an equal OPPORTUNITY offender, that makes all the hatefulness perfectly alright then, doesn't it? More like moronic.

Mari, I call Catholics insane because they are insane. I'm not going to respect people who are so breathtaking stupid that they believe a priest can say some magical words to insert Jesus into a wafer. That's just pure insanity. The death threats are only part of the problem. In the church the student was attacked by a lunatic Catholic who grabbed his arm and tried to pry his fingers open to get a worthless piece of bread. Now Catholic thugs are trying to get the student expelled and a professor fired, all for a tiny piece of bread. Catholics have no moral values at all. Also, they are just plain stupid. If Catholics think they can get an excellent professor fired because he doesn't respect their idiotic beliefs, then they deserve nothing but constant ridicule.

Harsh, critical review =/= hateful or moronic. It seems more like the insecurity of those at the other end of the critical review is what leads to their being "offended." Nothing is sacred or off-limits to inquiry (no matter how harsh the questions may be). Regardless of your views, please review Pharyngula so as not to make unwarranted claims about it or PZ in the future.

This reminds me of the fatwa against Salman Rushdie issued by Ayatollah Khomeini many years ago, and once again demonstrates the danger and the foolishness of mindless religious fundamentalism. Will they next ask the University of Minnesota library to remove all reference to Martin Luther?
