As probably a bunch of readers have already informed Ms McClure, she should get her facts straight. Central High School was an all-white school and in 1950 since student population was only around 1000 and the neighborhood had changed make-up Central became Cardozo, an all-black school. Desegration had not yet begun. We have an Alumni Association with over 1200 members plus many other graduates who are not members of the Association. I'm sure Ms McClure will hear from at least a few! Besides the great stadium we also had an indoor swimming pool but the pool fell into disrepair sometime after the changeover. We also had the largest or one of the largest auditoriums in the old high schools.
Just wondered if anyone has been receiving all the irate comments stirred up by this article----Central High was in existence until 1950--NOT 1928!! All Central's history is on file at the Sumner School Museum & Archives at 1201 17th St. NW Wash. DC 20036. In fact--the history of all former DC schools is on file there. We were proud of our school and its accomplishments--this article did us no favors! By the way, why was my previous comment marked as 'offensive'?
