DC is governed by self serving idiots. All the districts officials need to be voted out of office. The police chief hasn't a clue about the second amendment and needs to be run out of office.

Why is anyone surprised by this? For 30-plus years, the District's government proved itself incapable of reading the plain language of the Second Amendment. Now, it is proving itself incapable of reading the plain language of the Supreme Court's ruling, which, paraphrased, said, "The Second Amendment means what it says. Your restrictions on law abiding (would-be) gun owners are unconstitutional. Repeal them now." The council members and chief of police have a vested interest in keeping honest residents unarmed. As long as the crime rate continues to soar, the chief can continue to ask for more money and more officers, and the council can continue giving the police department more money and more officers, which makes the District government more powerful. The council can also use the ever-rising crime rate to pass more "Patriot Act-type" laws giving itself more power to intrude into the daily lives of citizens. But, if law-abiding citizens purchase firearms and carry them (at least in their homes) they will be much less likely to be successfully attacked by criminals. Bureau of Justice Statistics research shows that a person armed with a handgun is the least likely to be injured in a violent criminal assault and that property crimes against armed "victims" are much more likely to be unsuccessful. If the violent crime rate drops in the District because armed citizens are defending themselves in their homes, the chief has no justification to ask for budget or manpower increases, and the council has no excuse to further infringe on the rights of the law abiding citizens. And if you don't think having a gun will reduce violent crime, HONESTLY answer this question: A robber is standing in your front door with a knife. On the table beside you are a cordless phone and a loaded handgun. Which one will you pick up? If you said the phone, you are either: a) A pacifist, which I can respect but disagree with, b) A liar, c) An idiot. If the District council REALLY wanted to reduce violent crime, they would institute concealed carry for law-abiding citizens (the crooks already have concealed carry!) and provide the necessary safety and proficiency training AND the handguns free of charge to anyone who could pass the background check. DC's violent criminal gangs would relocate to Maryland within six months. And, by the way, yes, I'm a life (endowment) member of the NRA ... and I'm also a retired police officer who knows that bad guys choose easy victims and potentially armed citizens are NOT easy victims.

The liberals don't believe in democracy or in the Consitution, they hope to keep this in court until they can get another liberal court that will destroy the Constitution. If they can change the meaning of one Amendment this way they can change the meaning of all of them and there goes all of our rights. The liberals want us to be the serfs while they are the nobels in a feudal society.

RE: newsjeff; "DC's violent criminal gangs would relocate to Maryland within six months." Come on now, what are you talking about? They already have been doing that for years. Ever hear of PG County? Waldorf?

On the other hand, lets go ahead and put up some gun stores in DC so the animals can rob it and have a whole new free arsenal to terrorize the few decent people left. Or, possibly have legally armed criminals roaming about. Niccceeeee.

I cant believe what I am reading. If so called Officials refuse to follow the Law then how can They expect the People to follow it? It doesn't take a Rocket Scientist to see that They have not learned a thing and that They are not above the Law. I think the Mayor and all others that decided to ignore the ruling should be held in contempt of the Supreme Court and penalized for doing so. The People of D.C. need to throw those People out of Office and elect some one that will obey the Law.

Observe if you will the two concussed mule-headed individuals in the photo above. Public servants of this ilk will never in good faith accede to the SCOTUS ruling without being forced by a contempt citation from the court or be overidden by the U.S. Congress' District Committees. Mr. Cox, do you duty and file with the SC to have their ruling enforced...Congressmen Souder and Ross, move with all deliberate speed to give the law-abiding citizens of D.C. the individual and God-given right to self defense.

The bill "is proof that some members either don't have enough to do or know no bounds to their capacity for disrespect for democracy in the nation's capital," said Mrs. Norton, a Democrat. Democracy is the rule of fools by fools.

All I can say is "thank God I don't like in D.C."

DC Liberals have defined a "Machine Gun" as any gun able to fire over 12 rounds without reloading. This is in no way correct. This makes any number of handguns incorrectly classified as Machine Guns and therefore more fearsome and able to be confiscated. This behavior is typical of liberals who have NO CONSCIENCE when it comes to pretending to have changed the definition of something. Imagine what government health care will be like when the bureaucrats are the ones allowed to change the definition of "Health Care" or "Doctor," or "coverage," or "treatment" or anything else which would allow the government to completely subjugate you, take your money and your freedom, and get away with lying to you. LONG LIVE THE NRA - the only Politically active organization that gives you a great performance for your dues.

this ignorant mayor and the dumb police chief should be arrested by us marshals for failure to obey the law of the land a couple of political idiots who have no idea what they are doing and no respect for the constitution! adults of dc have a right to carry a gun for personal protection and the right of self defense You have no right to pass any laws against the citizens of dc when it comes to guns! Do you really think that the rest of america is stupid like you, if every gun owner marchs on your city hall do you think you can arrest everybody! resign your job and get out and take that police chief with you too. we are real americans not plastic people like you.

Officials In Dc believe that the residents of DC, are to damned illiterate to think for themselves. Obviously the government and police are far smarted and are of larger character than the average law abiding citizen. They feel if they can save one person from harming themselves than it is worth the destruction of the rights of the many to protect the few. Now how many of the officials sleep at night with a loaded gun by their bed??

Why did anyone wait for a new law to be passed. I would have gone out and bought what I wanted while there was no law. Any fees attached to a permit would be an infringement on the right. I feel background checks in general should be fought on this basis now that we have a decision from the Supreme Court.

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." -- Jefferson's "Commonplace Book," 1774-1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment, by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764
