On a purely personal level, of the Americans I have known over the last 50 years the youngest died in his forties, in the 1980s, of an illness whose nature is still a mystery to me. (I am leaving out those who died in automobile accidents or by suicide.) The oldest, who was born in 1897, died in 1995. They were both academics.
