ANALYSIS/OPINION:

Betsy Pisik’s article “Democrats eye restoring funds to U.N. agency” (Page 1, Sunday) about Democratic hopes to have our government join the other 180 countries of the world in contributing to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) was very thorough.

In the sweat and toil of everyday life, in the poorest rural areas of poor countries, UNFPA brings a ray of hope to mothers giving birth and families wanting to space their children.

Our defunding of UNFPA for the past six years has been a blot on our country’s reputation. Since 2002, when the Bush administration first withheld $34 million, Lois Abraham and I have been asking 34 million Americans to join 34 Million Friends of UNFPA. We are saving women’s lives and sending a positive message to the world from the American people.
