Did the columnist ask "What went wrong?"..How about this: Perhaps U.S. government and public opinion has allowed the NATO\coalition partners in Afghanistan to gradually pull their combat troops out of the fighting to the point that now the only ones who are doing the actual fighting against the taliban are American soldiers (the true freedom fighters). Also, where are these taliban getting their weapons & ammo...I wonder if it could maybe be Russia, China, Iran and North Korea?

Unfortunately, we have a government that seems to lack moral authority as was the case with South Vietnam. Karzi is unwilling to deal with the opium trade. This despite the fact that many farmers have successfully moved to standard agricultural production. It seem to me that a standard economic development model may work with sufficient military assets to provide security. However, local security needs to be developed as soon as possible. We need to define very clearly what current military objectives need to be, and then funding these objectives. The local populations' need for security must be clearly understood before we know what outside military assets are needed. Finally, we need to assess just what we need to continue pressing Al_Qaeda, and their leaders. The locals need to believe that the balance of local power is in our favor, before we can hope to use them to help use reach our strategic goals in the Afghanistan / Pakistan region.
