Mr. Chapin is to be commended for his generosity and authentic altruism. I am the first person to have received a kidney transplant through a donor I met on that site. My donor, Rob Smitty, of Tennessee, and I were to have had our surgeries on October 18, 2004. It didn't take place until 2 days later due to interference from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), the private government contractor running the cadaver organ transplant system in this country. When you sign a donor card in this country your organs are never donated to anyone. They are sold by UNOS and its affiliates the OPTN and OPO. In fact, in tax year 2006 this unholy alliance made over $2 BILLION from organ sales. Additionally, together they hold hundreds of millions of dollars in real estate across the US. UNOS will put lipstick on the pig and tell you it is illegal to sell organs. It is for everyone except this unethical and unfair organization. UNOS collects $585.00/year from each person registered on the national waiting list. One third of the folks on the list are not medically qualified to be there (Donna Leubke former UNOS board member). They also get more than $100 million/year from their contract with the government (Dept. of H&HS). Arthur Caplan is like a carnival barker for UNOS. He has no ethics so is not qualified to make any comment on medical ethics. There has never been a corpse UNOS could not squeeze money out of once they get their hands on it. As one of the UNOS former board members, Dr. John Fung, said in congressional testimony, "Their stock in trade is lies and public deception." UNOS has done everything it can to hinder altruistic living donor transplants until it can figure out a way to get money out of the growing trend. This is a brewing scandal. People associated with the unholy alliance will be going to jail when the scandal breaks.
