Mosley finally gets clearance

Shooting guard Sean Mosley made it through the NCAA's clearinghouse, ensuring Maryland will add at least one player to its basketball roster for next season.

"He is cleared," senior associate athletic director Kathleen Worthington said. "He is through the clearinghouse. He is admitted to Maryland, and he is in the STEP [orientation] program. We're good to go on Mosley."

Mosley averaged 24.2 points last season at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore and finished his career with 2,933 points, second in Maryland high school history.

Coach Gary Williams indicated earlier this month Mosley likely would join the program this season, and the 6-foot-4 Baltimore native's navigation of the admission process gives the Terrapins a morsel of good news in what was to date a tumultuous offseason.

Maryland, coming off a 19-15 season and a second-round exit in the NIT, signed Tyree Evans in April. The guard, whose circuitous career featured stops at two junior colleges and a statutory rape charge while he was in prep school, was released from his scholarship a month later.

Forward Gus Gilchrist, who was expected to join the Terps' frontcourt in late December, was released from his scholarship in early June in the hopes of immediately becoming eligible elsewhere. He landed at South Florida.

That leaves Mosley as the Terps' only signed newcomer. His arrival gives Maryland 10 scholarship players for next season, and he could play a significant role as a freshman.

Mosley is expected to wear No. 14 - a number not issued at Maryland in more than a decade and one that belonged to Williams in the mid-1960s.

Note - Maryland and Georgetown were placed on opposite sides of the bracket in the Nov. 27-30 Old Spice Classic and can't meet until the final day of the event in Orlando, Fla. The Hoyas face Wichita State in their tournament opener on Thanksgiving, while the Terrapins draw Michigan State later that day.
