Part of me would like to see the US withdraw completely from the rest of the world and see what the other countries would do.
Your article states: and he will urge more action to stop Iran's march toward a nuclear weapon - as though this "march" were an uncontested fact.
Don't you mean: and he will urge more action to stop Iran's "march toward a nuclear weapon"?
Since the only person who claims such a "march" is Bush himself. Neither the DoD, nor Iran's leaders, nor the IAEA, nor the rest of the world community have concluded that Iran is "marching" toward anything.
The United States is definitely doing a lot of "marching" these days. So it would seem someone is guilty of projection here...
I for one, don't really care about Europe and how Europe thinks. We have but one loyal friend in Europe and that is the United Kingdom. We have a host of people in this country who want to emulate socialist Europe - I do not. Instead, I seek the respect of the new challenger in the world for power, "The Peoples Republic of China". I seek their respect because I am wary of them. Europe can't even prosecute their involvement in Afghanistan well. They send troops, but don't want them to dirty their uniforms. Our focus should be on China for trade, energy, pollution, human rights, and 350% growth of its military in five years.

Both McCain and Obama have expressed support for aggressive development of alternative energy sources, which is the way you would get to Kyoto or a Kyoto-like carbon output reduction, whether the US formally embraces Kyoto or not. China and India will have to embrace alternative energy as well, or face limitations on their own economic development. And surely neither China nor India would likely desire becoming a policeman over squabbling ethnic and religious groups in the Middle East, even if the US seems to have a proclivity for doing so. So, I disagree, Europe will embrace either Obama or McCain. The Europeans are smart enough to understand form versus substance, even if some Americans are not.
Iran keeps announcing its supposed successes in its "peaceful" nuclear program. Apparently, some readers believe terror-supporting states are after nuclear capability for alternative energy purposes only, and that is OK with them. Common sense alone (lacking in some people) should signal caution--a terror-supporting country that sits on oceans of oil is developing a nuclear program; hmmmm.
On the other hand, many of these same "intellectuals" think the U.S. should NOT re-start its own nuclear power programs.
