I lived through the Nixon years, particularly difficult ones on American campuses.
The suave Kennedy had pronounced, in private, that Nixon had no style at all. Nixon probably did not care to possess style in Kennedy's sense.
In later years, long after Watergate, which he survived by many years, he said in an interview that Kennedy liked to think of himself as an intellectual, meaning that he himself did not think that JFK was that in the real sense.
Nixon may or not have started the culture wars but he had a good idea of what he was opposing. He met with Elvis Presley at the White House after Elvis had written to him saying that he had the trust of the young and could therefore contribute to the president's work among them.
